Today I participated in my first ever Rubik Cube competition. It was held at the Oil & Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC) in Seria. It's the second preliminary round organised by OGDC. First and second place will go through to the final which will be held in December this year.

Well.... I didn't manage to go through. My time wasn't that good today. I need more practice and 50 plus more algorithm to remember.

Contestant briefing

At 33 years old, I'm the oldest contestant ;) .... The others were all teens.

IABHM being interview

Each contestant given 3 rounds. My first round I solved in 56 seconds. Contestant weren't given any time to inspect the cube before start.

Second round I did 59 seconds. This was my worst round. I just can't find the cubies!!!!

Third round I did it in 46 seconds. Not good enough to go through.

I think the winner solve it in 32 seconds and second place solve it in 34 seconds. That's fast!

This advert was in last week Saturday Borneo Bulletin. I'm taking the challenge tomorrow.

I'm less active playing/practicing solving my Rubik's cube this year. This few days I've been practicing my speedcubing skills after work. Although my time is not as fast as before, I still can solve it below one minute.

Wish me luck tomorrow!

I was buying some toys for the kids. Decided to just get it from Takashimaya nearby the hotel I'm staying.

Then I saw it.... Rubik's Cubes. I enjoy solving and collect Rubik's Cubes.

I look at it carefully, checking the colour and its arrangement (yellow opposite white, red opposite orange, blue opposite green). It basically has the official colour and arrangement. Decided to buy the 3x3x3 Rubik's Cubes which cost me SGD10.95 each.

They also selling the 4x4x4 Rubik's Cube also known as Rubik's Revenge. I decide to get this one also. Cost me SGD19.95.

4x4 Rubik's Cube

But what got me most excited is the 5x5 Rubik's Cube also known as Rubik's Professor Cube. Cost only SGD29.95. If I were to order it from rubiks.com it will cost me USD29.99.

Rubik's Cube is a mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 by the Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture ErnÅ‘ Rubik. The plastic cube comes in four widely available versions: the 2×2×2 ("Pocket Cube"), the 3×3×3 standard cube, the 4×4×4 ("Rubik's Revenge"), and the 5×5×5 ("Professor's Cube"). 6×6×6 and 7×7×7 cubes are also currently being produced.

The 3×3×3 version, is the version usually meant by the term "Rubik's Cube". Originally called the Magic Cube by its inventor, it was renamed Rubik's Cube in 1980 and released worldwide in May of that year, winning a Spiel des Jahres special award for Best Puzzle. It is said to be the world's best-selling toy, with some 300,000,000 Rubik's Cubes and imitations sold worldwide.

Workings

A standard Cube measures approximately 21⁄4 inches (5.7 cm) on each side. The puzzle consists of the twenty-six unique miniature cubes ("cubies") on the surface. The Cube can be taken apart without much difficulty, typically by turning one side through a 45° angle and prying an "edge cubie" away from a "centre cubie" until it dislodges (however, prying loose a corner cubie is a good way to break off a centre cubie - thus ruining the cube). It is a simple process to solve a Cube by taking it apart and reassembling it in a solved state; however, this is not the challenge.

For most recent Cubes, the colors of the stickers are red opposite orange, yellow opposite white, and green opposite blue. However, there also exist Cubes with alternative color arrangements. These alternative Cubes have the yellow face opposite the green, and the blue face opposite the white (with red and orange opposite faces remaining unchanged).

Permutations

A Normal (3x3x3) Rubik's Cube can have 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 different positions, also referred to by the mathematical term permutations. Despite the vast number of positions, all Cubes can be solved in twenty-seven or fewer moves.

Me & Rubik's Cube

I love solving the rubik's cube. I have been able to solve it since I was seven years old. Right now I'm still working on improving my speed.

My goal is to solve all side in less than 30 seconds. I can solve it in less than one minute and my best time so far is 34 seconds. Check out some of the rubik's cube I have below.
